The signing of the Paris Agreement by India in 2015 to significantly reduce its carbon footprint by 2030 opened the way to increasing the generation of clean energy across the country’s energy mix.

It offers the country a new vision of meeting higher renewable energy targets (175 GW) by 2022 and is slowly curbing fossil fuel generation.

With a growing share of clean energy, 100 GW of solar energy was targeted by 2022, including 40 GW from solar roofs and 60 GW from utility projects.

This leads to an increasing demand in the country for products and technologies used in developing such clean energy projects as solar panels, modules, wafers, cells, assembly structures, trackers, inverters, etc. This led to growing new business opportunities for both national and international players in the country.

Accordingly, the total operating capacity of rooftop solar projects in India was 5,440 GW as of December 31, 2019. However, only 1,534 GW of new capacity was added in 2019, a 7 percent decrease from 2018 according to Bridge to India (BTI). Therefore, the total amount of inverters delivered in 2019 was 1.534 GW capacity for the solar projects on the roof.

However, a total rooftop solar capacity of 5,440 GW includes the commercial, industrial, private and public sectors with additional capacities of 1,116 GW, 2,848 GW, 748 MW and 728 MW, respectively.

In terms of business model, Capex has the largest share with 3.861 GW of solar capacity on the roof, while 1.579 GW of solar capacity is installed on the roof according to the Opex model.
