WASHINGTON, DC The US Department of Energy (DOE) has announced a selection of $ 130 million for new projects to advance solar technologies. Through the Bureau of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy’s Solar Energy Technologies Bureau, DOE will fund 67 research projects in 30 states that will reduce solar costs, increase US manufacturing competitiveness, and improve national grid reliability.
“Ensuring affordable, reliable electricity for all Americans while minimizing risk is a top priority for this department,” said US Secretary of Energy Dan Brouillette. “That means creating domestic production opportunities and increasing the resilience of the power supply system in the event of malfunctions. Projects to further develop solar technologies are crucial to achieving these goals. “
In addition to the further development of research in the fields of photovoltaics (PV), concentration of solar thermal energy (CSP) and system integration, the projects in the financing program of the DOE office for solar energy technologies for the 2020 financial year include new research areas in the fields of artificial intelligence (AI) and hybrid systems and solar with agriculture. - PV Hardware Research – $ 14 million for eight projects aimed at extending the life of PV systems and increasing the reliability of solar systems made from silicon solar cells, as well as new technologies such as thin film and bifacial solar cells.
- Integrated Thermal Energy Storage Demonstration and Brayton Cycle Equipment (Integrated TESTBED) – $ 39 million will be awarded to Heliogen, Inc., which will build and operate a supercritical carbon dioxide electrical circuit that will serve as a test site to accelerate commercialization of Low-cost CSP systems.
- Systems Integration – $ 34 million for 10 research projects developing resilient municipal microgrids to maintain and restore power during man-made or natural disasters, improve cybersecurity for PV inverters and power systems, and develop advanced hybrid systems that use other resources work together for improved reliability and resilience.
- AI Applications in Solar Energy with a Focus on Machine Learning – $ 7.3M for 10 projects that use AI and machine learning to optimize operations and sun forecasting, improve situational awareness in the distribution system and behind the meter, and the Enable integration of more solar energy.
- Manufacturing Innovations: Hardware Incubator – $ 14 million for 10 research projects that take innovative prototypes to a pre-commercial stage, including products that support US solar manufacturing and reduce installation costs.
- Solar energy development and diffusion studies $ 3 – $ 9.7 million for six research projects examining how information gets to stakeholders to make better decisions about solar energy and combine solar energy with energy efficiency, energy storage and electric vehicles.
- Solar and Agriculture: Systems Design, Values Framework, and Impact Assessment – $ 7 million for four projects that advance the technologies, research, and practices that farmers, ranchers, and others need to co-locate solar and agriculture.
- Small Innovative Projects in Solar (SIPS): PV and CSP – $ 5 million for 18 projects that advance innovative, novel ideas in PV and CSP and achieve significant results in one year.
