Broad Reach Power, an independent power producer based in Houston that owns a 5 GW portfolio of utility-scale solar and energy storage projects, announced that it has launched the 25 MW / 100 MWh front-of-the-meter Cascade Energy has acquired storage projects outside of Stockton, Calif., From a subsidiary of Enel.
“California’s expansive push towards a carbon-free grid, primarily through wind and solar power, makes energy storage a critical part of grid infrastructure. Cascade is the first of several projects that Broad Reach California can do to keep the grid safe and reliable as more renewable energy sources come online, ”said Justin Amirault, vice president of corporate development for Broad Reach Power. “We’re excited to be early adopters to help California achieve its important goals, and we’re pleased to have worked closely with an experienced developer like Enel.”
Cascade was developed by Enel and selected by PG&E to ensure the adequacy of resources under a 20-year contract signed in 2017. Broad Reach expects to continue development and start construction next year to bring the project online in 2022. The Cascade Energy Storage Project joins Broad Reach Power’s rapidly growing portfolio of battery systems in Texas, where Broad Reach is the leading owner of standalone storage projects in the ERCOT connection queue, and in the western US, where the company has more than 700 MW projects with signed liaison agreements.
“Similar to Texas, we built a significant project portfolio in the Californian ISO last year through greenfield development and M&A. We are pleased to announce the acquisition of Cascade in the market,” added the managing partner and CEO of Broad Reach Power added Steve Vavrik, whose company is supported by energy investors EnCap Investments LP, Yorktown Partners and Mercuria Energy. “In California and other regions of the west that are experiencing similar renewables penetration and increasing demand for electricity, our mission is to develop and purchase storage facilities at every stage of the development scale.”
