Enel X, the Advanced Energy Services division of the Enel Group, and energy management company Eaton announced plans to develop microgrids in Puerto Rico. The first 5 MW 2.2 MWh solar storage project will be housed at Eaton’s Aaton facility, which will manufacture circuit breakers for homes, buildings and a range of industrial applications.

Under the terms of the agreement, Enel X will build, own and operate the system on behalf of Eaton. Eaton will provide the installation know-how and key technology for the microgrid system, which includes the leading microgrid controller and the balance of electrical distribution equipment for the facility. The new microgrid will enable Eaton to generate, store, consume and feed renewable energy back into the local grid while reducing the burden on the regional supply infrastructure.

The Solar + Storage microgrid project will combine 5 MWac solar PV in combination with approx. 1.1 MW / 2.2 MWh battery storage and be fully integrated into the existing electrical systems of the facility including the on-site power generation. Eaton’s microgrid control technology compensates for where, when and how power is consumed to ensure the reliability of the site, even in the event of a power failure.
Earlier this year, the Puerto Rico Energy Bureau, the island’s energy regulator, released its latest Integrated Resource Plan (IRP). The IRP includes a mandate for the further development of microgrids and renewable energies with targets of at least 3,500 MW solar and more than 1,300 MW storage by 2025, as the island continues to build its infrastructure after the hurricane season 2017.
As with all Enel X storage deployments, the Microgrid project will use Enel X’s Distributed Energy Resources (DER) optimization software and its unique capabilities to maximize the value of the project for multiple applications, including savings on bills, incentive programs and grid services .
The project shows how Eaton’s “Everything as a Grid” approach for the energy transition can help customers safely add more renewable energies and energy storage systems, make operations more sustainable and resilient, and at the same time reduce costs.
