New York Power Authority plans to enable 325 MW of distributed and customer-sited solar by 2025

The Board of Trustees of the New York Power Authority (NYPA) yesterday approved a new strategic plan, VISION2030, which sets out a roadmap for transforming the state’s energy infrastructure into a clean, reliable, resilient and affordable system over the next decade. VISION2030 underscores NYPA’s commitment to working with customers across the state to ensure a cost-effective transition to clean energy while moving the state forward to meet Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s most ambitious goals under the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act ( CLCPA), the most ambitious to reach clean energy legislation in the nation.

“With the approval of VISION2030, we are proud to once again lead by example to meet the energy needs and challenges of the next decade,” said John R. Koelmel, chairman of NYPA. “As we continue to deliver affordable, reliable and clean electricity, we will increasingly work with our customers to transform the way they use energy and aggressively work towards the governor’s climate goals. This will ensure that we use our assets and expertise even more effectively to fuel the New York economy and to further stimulate and enable job creation and capital investment across the state. “

Under the leadership of Governor Cuomo, the state has set timetables for decarbonizing its electricity system, including moving to 70% renewable energy by 2030; 100% carbon-free electricity by 2040 and a climate-neutral economy by 2050. VISION2030 includes a path to decarbonization by moving NYPA’s natural gas facilities to low or zero carbon technologies and committing to providing carbon-free electricity to its customers by 2035 . Five years ahead of the carbon-free power goal by 2040. The roadmap provides more details on NYPA’s plans to deploy a comprehensive, upgraded transmission network across the state so that new, additional renewable energies can be added to the power grid and continue to exist in Rolle of clean hydropower as the basis for the state’s renewable energies.

VISION2030 focuses on five strategic priorities to meet NYPA customer and state clean energy goals. This includes NYPA’s intention to:

  • Work with customers to deliver clean and affordable energy solutions.
  • Pioneering work on the path to decarbonization while guaranteeing the reliability, resilience and affordability of the state power grid.
  • Facilitating the rapid development of communications goods.
  • Preserve the value of hydropower generation; and adaptively reinterpreting the New York state sewer system.

These strategic priorities are supported by NYPA’s recently approved four-year financial plan, which has five fundamental pillars: becoming the first end-to-end digital utility; Achieving world class environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance and reporting; Providing leadership on diversity, equity and inclusion priorities; Strengthening business resilience; and continuous progress in process quality, workforce planning and knowledge management.

Partnering with customers to meet their energy goals while driving CLCPA forward

NYPA will work with its customers and the state to meet their individual energy goals in line with the CLCPA by delivering clean and affordable energy along with innovative, integrated customer solutions. NYPA continues its role as a trusted energy advisor and helps its clients decarbonize by working with them to implement climate management projects in the areas of energy efficiency, renewable energy generation, optimized electrification and digitization. This redesign will provide a low cost supply of 70% renewable energy in a cost effective manner by 2030. NYPA will also enable 325 MW of distributed and customer-side solar energy by 2025 and 450 MW of storage projects by 2030. To drive electric mobility across the state, the transition to electric vehicles will be accelerated by installing charger stations for EV drivers, including chargers built for transit agencies to electrify buses and through EVolve NY, NYPA’s public fast-charging system.

Pioneers on the way to decarbonization

NYPA will lead by example and pave the way to decarbonization by acting as a test bed for innovation while ensuring the reliability, resilience and affordability of the state energy grid. To advance the transition from natural gas to even cleaner electricity, NYPA will lead the way in the development and demonstration of new low-carbon technologies and low-carbon short and long-term storage. NYPA will evaluate the economic performance of its gas fleet and take a collaborative approach with policy makers, community members and the private sector as it advocates market rules and guidelines and aims to achieve zero carbon emissions by 2035 before the governor hits 100%. emission-free electricity by 2040 target. NYPA will also lead by example in delivering carbon-free electricity to its customers by 2035.

NYPA recently signed an agreement with environmental law groups to evaluate how its natural gas-fired “peaker” facilities, six in New York City and one in Long Island, can move to use clean energy technologies while maintaining unparalleled power reliability becomes resilience requirements of New York City. Growing transmission to connect to renewable energies

As part of VISION2030, NYPA aims to be the leading transmission designer, owner and operator for New York State. Building a new transmission infrastructure to relocate distant renewable energy sources is critical to integrating renewable energies such as wind and solar on land and offshore into the mass flow system and achieving the target of 70% renewable electricity by 2030.

Three major projects are currently underway to help the state meet its changing transmission needs:

  • Replacement of the 86-mile Moses-Adirondack transmission lines from Massena to Croghan in the North Country. The $ 484 million SmartPath project will enable increased transmission of energy from renewable sources.
  • Upgrade of the transmission line from Marcy to New Scotland with LS Power Grid New York. The Mohawk Valley to Capital Region transmission line will remove bottlenecks in high voltage transmission and improve access to renewable energy sources.
  • Start of transfer initiative in north New York, the priority transfer project under the 2020 Accelerated Renewable Energy Growth and Community Benefit Act.
