According to ABB, 120 specialists will work on solutions for the next-generation battery charging infrastructure in its new E-Mobility Innovation Lab.

The 3,600 m2 facility, valued at US $ 10 million, was developed to drive further innovations in the field of electric mobility. It is based on the Delft University of Technology campus in the Netherlands and will drive future ABB portfolio development as well as research and development projects for electric vehicles. In 2020, the university was named one of the 15 best engineering and technology universities in the world.

The complex, which will house up to 120 specialists, marks the return of ABB’s EV charging business to the home of its conception. In fact, the students who founded Epyon (the electric vehicle start-up acquired by ABB in 2011) were former students of Delft University of Technology.

“As part of ABB Electrification, we are investing approximately $ 400 million annually in research and development to ensure we remain at the forefront of technology leadership and set the standard for sustainable mobility. As part of this investment, we are focusing on pushing the boundaries of e-mobility, especially in the areas of charging, storing and digitizing. The new lab will allow us to intensify our collaboration with EV manufacturers to drive performance and advancement across the industry, “added Muehlon added.

Ensuring the seamless connection between vehicles, charging stations, charging systems and the power grid as well as the software systems that support them is a central concern of ABB. The E-Mobility Innovation Lab has been equipped with the latest technology to ensure that ABB chargers are compatible with all vehicle types. Simulators were built for this very purpose, with 95 percent of all tests being performed with a digital copy of vehicles.

To test the performance of vehicles in very hot or cold weather, ABB has developed special environmental test rooms in which solutions are exposed to extreme conditions, including temperatures from -40 to +100 degrees Celsius and high humidity. The atrium is large enough for manufacturers to drive their cars, buses, or trucks into the warm and controlled environment to conduct tests that will help advance charging for the fast-growing heavy-electric vehicle segment.

For heating and cooling, the ABB complex is connected to the geothermal heating / cooling system at the Technical University of Delft. Solar collectors with solar inverters are housed on the roof, with which direct current obtained from the sun can be converted into alternating current. Together with the advanced building management system from ABB for air conditioning and lighting control and the battery storage system, test energy can be fed back into the grid.

In November of this year, ABB announced that it would increase R&D and digital spending to around 5 percent of the company’s annual revenue. This approach creates superior value for customers and leads to higher sales quality for the company, with a focus on high-growth segments including electric mobility. ABB employs around 7,000 people in research and development across the Group, 60 percent of whom are focused on the development of software and digital innovations.

ABB entered the EV charger market in 2010 and to date has sold more than 17,000 ABB DC fast chargers in 80 countries. The commitment to progress in electromobility is most evident in the title partnership with the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, which is about to enter the fourth season. From the 9th season 2022-23, ABB will become the official fee supplier for the championship.
