Trichy: On Monday, Tangedco started a week to raise awareness about saving electricity in order to promote the importance of using energy-efficient products. The department has also launched online and offline campaigns to encourage the use of five-star home appliances with a BEE (Bureau of Energy Efficiency) rating.
Officials said the city of Trichy uses an average of 1.7 lakh units of electricity per year, and demand is increasing 10% every year. Tangedco has posted banners at 40 public meeting points encouraging people to charge their phones during the day.
“Since people tend to sleep with their phones connected, the switch will still be on after it has been fully charged,” said a Tangedco official.
Industrial electricity users have been encouraged to use capacitors to avoid power loss and to maintain power factor.
Officials also urged residents to opt for BEE five-star household appliances such as air conditioners, televisions and refrigerators, and to provide advice on saving electricity at EB billing counters and social media handles.
“The residents can avoid using reverse motors. The process of re-winding copper in motors will use more electricity and people will end up paying more electricity fees, “the official added. Tangedco has started an awareness campaign for the installation of solar modules.
Due to the Covid19 pandemic, officials said competitions, which are normally held for students to promote electricity saving, have been suspended this year.
The awareness campaigns were carried out in seven Tangedco departments in the district. The trip lasts until December 20th.
