Suntrace and Baywa r.e. complete largest off-grid solar-battery hybrid system for mining industry

Suntrace GmbH and BayWa re, together with B2Gold Corp. (CA) completed commissioning of the world’s largest off-grid solar battery hybrid system for mining at the Fekola gold mine in Mali, West Africa. The solar battery hybrid system was successfully integrated into the existing power plant operation and put into operation. The solar system should be 100% complete by the end of June.

Such hybrid projects, which combine solar energy with conventional energy generation and battery storage, are an effective way of providing a reliable power supply day and night in off-grid areas. B2Gold was ideally tailored to their needs and approved the hybrid project for implementation in July 2019 after the preliminary studies by Suntrace and BayWa re were completed.

The Fekola gold mine operates around the clock. During the day, three of six heavy oil generators can be switched off with the new 30 MW solar system. The energy production of the remaining three generators could also be significantly reduced. The 15.4 MWh battery storage compensates for fluctuations in energy generation and ensures reliable operation, with up to 75% of the goldmine’s electricity needs being covered by renewable energies during the day.

The integration of the solar power plant into the battery system ensures a safe and reliable power supply, saving 13.1 million liters of heavy fuel oil (HFO) annually. The close cooperation of all three parties as one team was crucial to the implementation of this complex project and helped to realize the enormous potential of solar battery hybrid systems.

The PV battery system will help reduce CO2 emissions by 39,000 tons per year.
