Marriott Hacienda Belén is installing a microgrid to reduce CO2 emissions and power consumption by installing more than 450 solar panels

BOSTON – (BUSINESS WIRE) – CPG Hospitality and Enjoy Group, owners of the Costa Rica Marriott Hacienda Belén, announced today that the hotel is installing a Heila Technologies controlled, optimized and managed microgrid that will be the first Marriott chain in Latin America represents America to use the technology. The microgrid will enable the hotel to avoid 20.8 tons of CO2 per year, reduce electricity consumption, cover energy and increase resistance to power outages.

A microgrid is an integrated low-voltage energy generation and distribution system consisting of solar collectors, accumulators, inverters and control software that manages the generation, storage and distribution of the generated energy. Microgrids can be controlled individually or operated in parallel to the public grid. Microgrids can also function independently of the grid, protecting against voltage fluctuations, power outages, or other anomalies from the grid, adding an extra layer of reliability while relying on the storage batteries.

The Marriott Hacienda Belén initiative in Costa Rica is built on the company’s sustainability goals and Marriott International’s 360 Serve program, through which the hotel chain seeks to have a positive impact on the communities in which it operates.

“Our goal with this initiative is to help the environment by reducing CO2 emissions while reducing electricity consumption. We have been investing in sustainability programs since 2017 – a key element in improving our guest experience, ”said Daniel Grew, Strategic Sustainability Advisor for CPG Hospitality.

greenenergy®, a Costa Rica-based company, will install the microgrid in collaboration with Massachusetts-based Heila Technologies, whose control and optimization software Heila Edge® will serve as the brain of the microgrid. Heila is known for its decentralized approach to controlling and optimizing microgrids, which is the most modern architecture in the industry today. The Heila Edge® platform leverages emerging intelligence that automatically connects every power asset in every configuration to a resilient company network. Its modular and adaptable nature allows it to scale as demand changes and the network evolves, making it one of the most flexible products on the market today.

“Today’s traveler is looking for a resort that is both comfortable and environmentally friendly. This microgrid deployment is part of a larger environmental initiative at Marriot that includes planting more trees across the country, ”said Dennis Whitelaw, general manager of the Costa Rica Marriott Hacienda Belén.

The investment represents an important change in the energetic operation of the hotel. The expansion of the microgrid is expected to be completed in November and, with its decentralized control technology, will create the most modern control and optimization system in the country. With the installation, the hotel will create 30 indirect jobs in Costa Rica.

“At greenenergy we are constantly evolving, researching and innovating to offer clean energy solutions with the most advanced technology that will help the country economically reactivate and benefit our customers in pursuing their triple bottom line goals,” said Fernando Ortuño, CEO of greenenergy® Costa Rica.

“Our mission is to offer more projects like this intelligent solutions that focus on energy savings and resilience, and we are proud to have been selected by greenenergy® as the preferred provider of control and software solutions. We will continue to work together in the future . ” provide the most advanced electrical microgrids to other Costa Rican and regional companies, “added Francisco Morocz, CEO of Heila Technologies.
